Proposal Inspired by ’10 Things I Hate About You’ Leaves Internet ‘Sobbing’

A movie-inspired proposal has melted hearts online this week after capturing viral attention on TikTok.

Mel Beringer, using the TikTok handle melberinger, shared the video of the magical moment on Friday. It has since received more than 4 million views.

In the video, shot on the river in Chicago, Beringer’s boyfriend Mo pops the question with a little bit of inspiration from the 1999 movie 10 Things I Hate About You.

In the video, the unsuspecting girlfriend is walking by the water when she notices her sister recording and sees her boyfriend just up the path—starting the first few bars of the Frankie Valli song Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.

Just like Heath Ledger In the hit teen movie, Mo sings the first line of the classic tune before a brass band comes in to help.

As he continues the song, the couple walk closer together before Beringer’s boyfriend gets down on one knee and asks the all-important question with a backdrop of the wonderful brass band.

In a later video, Beringer thanked everyone for the love and best wishes on her proposal video: “I know a lot of you were interested in how he did it.” She reveals that her project manager fiancé spent quite a long time planning the magical moment, and explained: “He scouted out the location a couple of weeks in advance, made sure the timing is perfect and the positioning is perfect.”

“What I thought I was doing was going for a walk along the river with my sisters,” explained the bride-to-be: “We’re just walking and I start to hear the music and I think, ah, that’s nice, that’s my favorite song.”

But when she walked further and noticed her brother standing there and spotted her now-fiancé Mo, she realized what was happening.

“It was just a dream come true. Truly,” gushed Beringer: “Needless to say he totally nailed it.”

According to a survey from wedding site The Knot, 87 percent of engagements are planned ahead of time, while just 13 percent are spontaneous decisions. In fact, 4 in 10 proposers said that they planned how they would pop the question one to three months in advance.

The most popular place to propose is a scenic location, with 30 percent saying that was their place of choice, while 21 percent asked the all-important question in the comfort of their own homes.

Viewers of the viral proposal video adored the moment, with thousands rushing to the comments to praise the stand-out proposal.

“This is the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen,” said one viewer: “I’m now mad at my husband,” she joked.

“Well this is everything,” wrote another user.

Another viewer dubbed the moment the “best proposal EVER,” while one commenter joked: “Brb, telling my husband he needs to try again but try harder this time.”

“I’m sobbing,” wrote one TikToker: “It’s nice to see people so in love with each other.”

“This is unreal,” said one viewer, while another said: “Imagine someone loving you this much.”
