On a train near Aachen, a 31-year-old man suddenly pulled out a knife and stabbed his fellow passengers. According to previous information, his action was based on a “psychotic experience”, investigators say – it may not have been a terrorist attack.

The 31-year-old, who suddenly stabbed several passengers on a regional train in Herzogenrath near Aachen on Friday morning, is being admitted to a psychiatric clinic at the moment. The Public Prosecutor’s Office confirmed, on Saturday, that there was no evidence of a terrorist background or religious extremism for the suspect. On the contrary, according to the current cognitive state, it is very likely that the suspect suffers from psychosis.

The 31-year-old is an Iraqi who came to Germany as a refugee in 2015. According to advice from the refugee home where he was living at the time, he was temporarily classified as a “test case for Islamism” in 2017. When that was impossible, a passenger punched him in the face and then pulled out a kitchen knife. At first he stabbed aimlessly and then intentionally stabbed several other passengers.

In the end, five people were injured and the attacker himself. Another passenger – supported by other people, including a federal police officer – overpowered the 31-year-old and disarmed him. The Public Prosecutor announced the opening of investigations in three cases on suspicion of serious bodily harm and attempted murder.

When registering with the authorities, the Iraqi stated that he was a Shiite. At the time of the crime, 270 people were on the train.
